and its over
My supervisor walked me to room 7 on the 2nd floor of the Lord Hope building for the viva.
It was just after 11 am when we walked in. The professors stood up; we were introduced. We changed the table arrangement to facilitate the discussion. And there went the conversation (it was lovely and was in such a relaxing atmosphere ).
I said whatever I wanted to say; I explained my points whenever necessary; I defended whatever I thought I needed to and the bottom line – I was being very frank and honest. I also remember what Dr. Laura (what a lovely lady she is) told me after 9.00 am this morning – be confident, talk with authority. That exactly what I did. I was not quite sure if I did well – but my supervisor gave a thumb up as we walked out that room (at about 12.00) and he further elaborated how happy he was with the way I answered all questions, how I showed the examiners that I know much beyond the scope of my thesis, the fact that the examiners are impressed with the originality and the quality of reseach I’ve shown in my thesis; all in all my supervisor told me that I did very well.
Oh seriously, I can’t ever express how honoured I feel about having him as my supervisor. He’s the head of the department – which goes without saying – will make him the busiest person in the department. Despite that, he gave such a guidance that contributes so much of letting me of becoming a Dr as of today.
Oh yes, as we sat chatting and waiting for the examiners to discuss their finding (which I seriously thought was just a break and that they would continue with the viva afterwards), we were called back to the viva venue and the moment I walked in, Professor (oh, can I mention his name) oh well, for the sake of his privacy – let refer to this very kind (it is very obvious) and gentleman as my external examiner. There he was standing with his hand extended ready to shake mine and told me: “Congratulations! we have decided to award your PhD”. I shook his hand but I stood there not believing what I heard. Then the other examiner – who is equally a nice and gentleman – also congratulated me.
My God, is that really true? would it be that easy? I could not believe myself. The only thing they wanted me to change is to replace the word “UK” with English in some places – which the internal examiner told me I can do over a night. He also thought if I may want to add a sentence in Chapter II to give an introduce the idea – the original idea which I formulated and submitted in Chapter III – which may take less than an hour to do.
My supervisor then asked about the time frame – within how long period I would need to affect the changes. They said, it would take a day – but its up to me how long I think I will need. I suggested if I can meet the examiner to have a talk by tomorrow, affect the changes (which he suggested I can easily do by looking for the word ‘UK’ and replace that with ‘English’ – although he said I should be cautious while doing that) over the weekend and show those changes to him to see if it meets his expectation.
I will be meeting this professor tomorrow at 2.00. He will hand over the report to me, give me the idea where he thinks the word ‘UK’ needs to be replaced by ‘English’ and where I shall add a sentence in Chapter II that basically introduces the original contribution I made in Chapter III. Unfortunatelly thereafter he will not be available until Tuesday – thus I will just have to wait until then – which is all fine with me.
Say I will print the final version of the thesis by Tuesday – if possible get it submitted for binding by that day or the next day. If I am lucky enough, I’ll get the hard-bound copies by Wednesday. Just to be on the safe side, I’ll spare Thursday (I will need to go to the Registry anyway to enrol for the June Graduation). So, I will leave UK insya Allah next Friday.
Oh yes, thank God – so very much alhamdulilLah, I can put that Dr. initial before my name since 12.20pm today. I feel so released, pleased, and all sorts of joy right now
I miss my dearest Adzka so badly (of course) and my beloved husband too. To them I dedicate this degree and finally, I do have one of my childhood’s dream fulfilled (but that was not the reason why I pursued PhD anyway).
Oh one other thing which makes me feel so very happy is that after the end of the session, the examiners told me that I should get my thesis published. They repeated the expression of how impressed they are with the efforts I have taken to come out with such an original and critical idea on the subject and put it accross in the convincing way (well, they told me so, I am just typing those here). One of the examiners told me, I should even get it published as a book; the other examiner agreed – while adding that as an alternative, I may also publish them as series of articles. Oh yes, I feel good right now – I am on cloud 9. Alhamdulillah – all thanks to Allah for this.

Congratulations! What a feeling, becoming a DR. It took a while to get over the shock and thus writing now. We are so proud of you as you managed to finish in three years and not only that without any corrections! Bravo! What an achievement! A precedent indeed for the law school. Our love and doa will be always be there for you and your family.

Dear my friend Hurriyah,
Congratulations to you and your family. What it is nice to me is that you could get your Ph.D less than 4 years in particular without normal corrections in the school of law, because normally most of the phd students there have some problems with their supervisors or Internal Examiner and ….., Bravo, you must thank of God and then thank of your husband that help you so much. My regards and doa will be always for you and your family.
Regards
Mohammad
